Bank employment holds while charters drop

While the number of banks has declined 32 percent in the last decades, the level of employment has declined just 3.5 percent during the same period. Counting only the last nine years, employment in the banking industry has actually increased by 13,000 jobs, or 0.6 percent. The year-end 2017 employment total, however, is still well short of the pre-crisis level. At year-end 2007, the banking industry reported a total of 2.215 million FTEs.
