Craig Dahl has retired as president and CEO of Detroit-based TCF Financial Corporation today. Vice Chair David Provost was named CEO and Thomas Shafer was named to the board as vice chair  of TCF Financial and CEO of TCF National Bank.

Michael Jones, currently executive vice president, regional banking, will become president and chief operating officer of TCF Bank.

Dahl oversaw the merger of equals between TCF, previously based in Wayzata, Minn., and Detroit’s Chemical Bank, announced in 2019. Dahl has spent 21 years with TCF and was named president and CEO of pre-merger TCF in 2016, taking on the same role for the combined company.

“We had complementary businesses and adjacent markets; we don’t have identical businesses in common markets,” Dahl said, reflecting on the merger at the fall 2019 Bank Holding Company Association seminar. “We have a tremendous organization coming out of this transaction.”

Provost served as president and CEO of Chemical Financial from June 2017 to the August 2019 merger, and as vice chair since then. Shafer served as vice chair and a director of Chemical until August 2019 and as president and COO post-merger.

Since the merger, Jones has served as executive vice president of regional banking, responsible for retail banking, consumer lending, small business banking, middle market and regional commercial banking, wealth management, treasury management, municipal banking, mortgages and home lending. Previously, he was executive vice president, consumer banking at pre-merger TCF, and previously served as its chief financial officer.

“Craig’s leadership has been instrumental in getting TCF to the point we are today. He has guided TCF through a successful integration program and has worked tirelessly with our teams to build many of our businesses from the ground up over the past 20 years,” said Executive Chair Gary Torgow. “We congratulate Craig on a tremendous career and thank him for his many contributions. All of us at TCF are eternally grateful for his leadership.”

As previously announced, effective Oct. 1, Brian Maass succeeded Dennis Klaeser as CFO. In addition, R. Patricia Kelly, Chris McComish and Daniel Terpsma joined the TCF Bank executive leadership team and will report to Jones.
