Lending leader turned toward operations

Shelly Steere grew up in northern Minnesota but moved to Minneapolis to attend the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. She worked for a while in the insurance department of the Minnesota Bankers Association, and she “always had a keen interest in math and numbers.” But she didn’t necessarily think she would become a banker.

Then in 1990 Steere took an interim role as assistant to the president of Grand Rapids State Bank in Grand Rapids, Minn., filling in for someone who was on maternity leave. Steere has been with the bank ever since.
