Housing sector shows signs of life

Existing home sales rose 5.1 percent in February, the biggest percentage increase since July of 2003, according to the National Association of Realtors. Pending home sales rose as well in most regions, with a 14.5 percent jump in the Midwest. Other glints of good news, compiled by the Mortgage Bankers Association, included the first rise since last July in new home sales and the first gain in 11 months in the Federal Housing Finance Administration’s Purchase-Only House Price Index.
