Straight Talk — Collection blues

Nothing humbles a person like collections work. Early in my adult life, I was a caretaker in an apartment building and it was my job to collect rents every month. Rent was due on the first but when the fifth or sixth would roll around, I typically had to visit three or four tenants who failed to pay on time. Most paid when asked. I remember one guy who regularly paid late and often answered the door in his underwear; apparently he didn’t care much more about his appearance than he did about his credit rating.
