Nebraska banking pioneer dies at 92

Nebraska banking trailblazer Alice Dittman died Oct. 1 at the age of 92.

Dittman was the first woman to become a bank president in Lincoln and Omaha when she was named president and CEO of York, Neb.-based Cornhusker Bank in 1975. Dittman assumed the role after her husband, Mark, died of cancer. The couple had started two banks together, including one in Central City, Neb., and another in Richmond, Mo.

Dittman oversaw Cornhusker Bank’s growth to a nearly $236 million institution from $8 million when she began. She chaired Cornhusker Bank’s board from 1993-1996, and served on the board until 2013, later becoming chair emeritus.

Dittman was the first woman to chair the Nebraska Bankers Association and Community Bankers Council in 1993 and 1997, respectively.

Dittman had bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska College of Business, and completed the Harvard/Radcliffe post graduate program in business administration.
