Three Indiana bankers recognized for leadership

The Indiana Bankers Association recognized three members with Leaders in Banking Excellence awards.

Michael K. Bauer, senior vice president of WesBanco Bank, Wheeling, W.Va.; Michael E. Schrage, CEO & chair of Merrillville, Ind.-based Centier Bank; and Michael F. Petrie, chair of Carmel-based Merchants Bank of Indiana were honored by the Indiana Bankers Association as Leaders in Banking Excellence, the association’s highest honor, at a ceremony at IBA headquarters in Indianapolis on Aug. 4.

Considered the association’s highest honor, the awards were presented Aug. 4 at the IBA’s headquarters in Indianapolis. This year’s recipients included: 

  • Michael K. Bauer, senior vice president and senior credit officer with Wheeling, Va.-based WesBanco Bank. Bauer is based in New Albany, Ind. 
  • Michael Petrie, chair of Carmel-based Merchants Bank of Indiana and its holding company Merchants Bancorp. Petrie co-founded Merchants Capital. 
  • Michael E. Schrage, chair and CEO of Merrillville, Ind.-based Centier Bank. Schrage, who joined the bank in 1972 when it was known as Bank of Whiting, was first elected chair of the board a decade later. He is the fourth generation of family ownership.   

“Honorees are chosen for their positive impact not only on Indiana’s banking industry but on the communities they serve,” IBA stated. “They are nominated by IBA-member organizations and approved by the IBA board of directors.”
