Independent hires CFO

Michigan’s Independent Bank Corporation has hired Gavin A. Mohr as chief financial officer, starting Sep. 14. He replaces Robert Shuster, who had been serving as interim CFO at the Grand Rapids, Mich., bank.

Since April 2016, Mohr has been CFO of STAR Financial Bank , a $2.1 billion bank in Fort Wayne, Ind.  He joined STAR in September 2014 as Treasurer. Prior to joining STAR, Mohr was treasurer of Yadkin Bank and Trust, Statesville, N.C., and began his career in 2007 with Tower Financial Corporation, Fort Wayne. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in finance from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and an MBA from Indiana University, Fort Wayne.

“We are excited to have Gavin join our organization. His strong leadership capabilities and excellent technical skills will be a great addition to our team,” said Brad Kessel, president and CEO of the $4 billion Independent.

Shuster, executive vice president and CFO of the holding company and the bank, had returned on an interim basis following his previous retirement on January 31. He will remain with the organization as a senior financial executive until the end of October to assist with the transition.

The position of CFO was briefly held this year by Stephen Erickson, formerly with Midland States Bancorp, Effingham, Ill. Erickson left Independent in June for undisclosed reasons.
